- Statistical Analysis of 1,349 Cases of In-Patients with Various Tuberculosis in Korea.

- Abstract
- We studied retrospectively the charts of 1,162 in-patients (that is 1,349 lesions) under 20
years of age who were hospitalized with various tuberculosis in Hanyang University Hospital
from May 1972 to December 198L
The results of the observation are as follows:
1. Annual distribution of 1,162 patients with tuberculosis revealed little fluctuation over the years.
2. The age and sex distribution of tuberculosis is as follows: The 1,162 patients consisted,
of 1 patient in neonatal period, 173 patients in infancy, 391 patients in early childhood, 121
patients in late childhood, and 476 patients in adolescence. Of these, male accounted for 669
patients, and female for 493 patients, showing a ratio about 1.4 to 1.
3. Of the total 1,349 cases, pulmonary TB was 436 cases(32.3%) and extrapulmonary TB
was 913 cases(67.7%). The pulmonary TB were again subclassified into 130 cases(9.6%)
with primary pulmonary TB and 306 cases(22.7%) with post-primary pulmonary TB. Of 913-
cases with extrapulmonary TB, TB of meninges & CNS accounted for 358 cases(26.5%)r
respiratory TB other than lung for 199 cases(14.8%), bone and joint TB for 122 cases(9.0
%), miliary TB for 102 cases(7.6%), abdominal TB for 65 cases(4. 8%), genitourinary TB
for 21 cases(l. 6%), and TB of other organs for 46 cases.
In view of age distribution, primary pulmonary TB, TB of meninges & CNS and miliary
TB were more prevalent in early childhood and infancy. Whereas post-primary pulmonary
TB, respiratory TB other than lung, bone & joint, abdominal and genitourinary TB were
prevalent in adolescence, that is the more cases for the older age.
4. The percent distribution of sex in specific anatomic sites of tuberculosis: Respiratory
TB other than lung was more prevalent in males(p<. 01),whereas miliary and abdominal
TB were more prevalent in females(p<. 01).
5. The percentage of positive chest X-ray findings (pulmonary, pleurisy and pulmonarymiliary lesions etc.)
in extrapulmonary TB cases was as follows: Abdominal TB, 33.8% ;genitourinary TB, 33.3%;
TB of meninges & CNS, 27.9% ; bone & joint TB, 10.7%; and TB of other organs, 8.7%.
