Abstract
The author has investigated ultrastructural changes of the renal proximal and distal convoluted tubular epithelial cells of rats with oral administration of aspirin, COmg per kg of body weight for 15 and 30 days consecutively. The experimental animals have divided into two group. The group I was received aspirin for 15 consecutive days and group H for 30 days. The animals were sacrificed 30 minutes, 1 and 3 days after administration. Then both kidney were removed and examined grossly, histologically and electron microscopically. The results were summarized as follow: Electron microscopically the proximal convoluted tubular epithelial cells showed partial shedding of microvilli, moderate increase in number, and dilatation of SER, moderate loss of mitochondial cristae, considerable thickening of basement membrane and moderate disappearance of irregularity of basal intussusception in experimental group I. In group H, The proximal epithelial cells were more severely injured than group I. subcellular morphologic changes according to intervals of sacrificed time after administration were similar. In the distal epithelial cells, destruction and disappearance of cytoplasmic organelles with nuclear pyknosis and prominent disappearance and irregular arrangement of basal intussusception were seen in both groups. As the above result, it suggested that injuries of the renal proximal convoluted epithelial cells induced by aspirin occur mainly in SER, [mitochondria, basal intussception, microvilli, and basement membrane, and these changes are reversible, the distal epithelial cells showed necrotic processes in the cytoplasmic and nuclear elements which were irreversible changes.
