- Abstract
- 338 mothers who had expsrienced breast feeding were surveyed through questionnaire about
the reason for breast feeding failure at the pediatric outpatient department and well babjr clinic of
Ewha Womans University Hospital from July to August 1981.
1) 50.7% df mothers intended breast feeding “for baby’s health” and the median intended, time was 6 months.
2) The majority of failure is in the first 4 months of life. 3) About one half of mothers(57.9%) was recommanded breast feeding by their husband and grandparents but doctor’s advise was only 3.9%. 4) Breast feeding was recommanded by husband and grandparents of bab yin about one half of cases but the main reason for breast feeding failure was “inadequate milk supply” (41.4%),and “for mother’s health” (10.2%). 5) Nursing method was significantly related with type of feeding in the nursery. From these results, it is clear that mothers should be given prenatal education about nursing and accurate knowlege about breastmilk. Also breast feeding in the nursery should be encouraged and rooming-in is recommanded for promotion of breast feeding.
