Rates of Adverse Reactions Associated with Modified DPT Vaccine in Korean Infants and Children.

Abstract
Ths clinical research with the modified DPT vaccine, including filamentous hemagglutiniit (F.H.A.) pertussis component vaccine, in Japan showed that it had the same immune response and efficacy, but much less adverse reactions than the usual DPT vaccine which included the killed pertussis vaccine. We studied prospactively the rates of adverss reactions occurring within 7 days of immunization with modified DPT vaccine in Korean infants and children to compare its safety in Korean with that in Japanese. From April 30, 1982 to December 15, 1982, 115 infants and 6 children, were immunized' with notified DPT vaccine ons to three times as a routine immunization schedule at pediatric OPD of Seoul National University Hospital.(total: 295 times). The rates of adverse reactions occurring within 48 hours of immunization with modified: DPT vaccine were as follows; high fever(>38.9°C); 1.8%, mild fever(<38.9°C); 6.3% irritability and crying: 11.9%, persistent crying(>1 hr duration); 0.007% vomiting; 2.8%, anorexia; 3.5%, diarrhea; 5.6%, rash; 1.8%, local redness; 1.1% local swelling; 1.1%, pain; 1.1% Encephalitis, seizure and other severe adverse reactions were not observed. The rates of adverse reactions were not increased, even when the modified DPT vaccines were given to the infants and children, who had been immunized previously with the usual DPT vaccine: one to four times. There were not significantly different rates of local reactions among the series of three inoculations. (p>0.05) With the results, we can suggest that there are no more risks of clinical use of modified DPT vaccine in Korean infants and children than those in Japanese. But the more experiences and continuous follow up studies are desirable to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of this modified DPT vaccine.
