- Abstract
- We experienced a case of chylothorax in a 23-days-old female who was admitted to the
department of pediatrics because of respiratory difficulty and poor feeding.
She was born by full-term, vacuum-extractedl The 2nd stage of labor was prolorged and
umbilical cord was encircled her neck at birth.
Chest P-A showed massive effusion of the right lung. Milky white fluid was obtained
from thoracentesis. It was odorless, sterile on bacterial examination and cleared by alkali
and ether. Fat globules were found on Sudan H stain and chylous effusion was diagnosed.
She was managed by repeated thoracentesis (8 times), MCT diets and intravenous hyperalime-
ntation. She was discharged on 36th hospital day with good response.
