A Study on Serum Cortical and Glucose Levels of Cord Blood in Newborn.

Abstract

We have studied the serum cortisol levels of cord blood in newborn infants (40 cases) and. the serum cortisol levels of maternal blood at parturition (40 cases). And we also studied the serum glucose levels of cord blood in cases of newborn infant. For the purpose of analysis， the study objects were divided into two groups: normal vaginal delivery (35 cases) and cesarian section delivery (5 cases). Serum cortisol levels were measured by the method of radioimmunoassay (Amerlex Cortisol RIA Kit, Amersham International Limited, UK) and serum glucose levels were measured by O-Toluidine method (Glucose Reagent and Standard Set. B, Japan). The following results were obtained. 1) The mean serum cortisol levels of cord blood in 40 cases of the newborn infant were 13.1±8.3 jug/100 ml and the mean serum cortisol levels of maternal blood in 40 cases of the mother were 49.1±28.0 신g/100 ml. In comparison of serum cortisol levels for the newborn, infants and the mothers, the serum cortisol levels of the newborn infants were significantly lower than those of the mothers (p<0.01). 2) The correlation of the serum cortisol levels of cord blood in the newborn infants and. the serum cortisol levels of the motherswere not significant (r=0.18). 3) The mean serum cortisol levels of cord blood in 35 cases of noral vaginal delivery and in 5 cases of cesarian section delivery were 14.1 土8.2 j«g/ml and 4.9±2.2 fig/100 ml respectively. In comparison of serum cortisol levels cord blood between two groups, the serum cortisol levels of cord blood in cesarian section delivery were signifcaintly lower than those of cord blood in normal vaginal delivery (p<0.01). 4) There observed no significant diurnal variations on the serum cortisol levels which related to the time of delivery in the newborn infants and the mothers. 5) In comparison of the serum cortisol levels of cord blood for the gestational age in normal newborn infants, there were no significant differences between the newborn infants under 40 weeks of gestation and the newborn infants over 40 weeks of gestation. 6) The mean serum glucose levels of cord blood in 25 cases of normal newborn infant were 87.6+31.2 mg/ml. The correlation between serum glucose and cortisol levels of cord blood in the normal newborn infants wore not significant (r=0.042).
