Abstract
We have seen 96patients who were admitted with purpura to the Pediatric Department of Kwangju Christian Hospital during the period of 10 years from Jan., 1971 to Dec., 1980. The following observations were made; 1) Leukemia(26 cases, 27.0%) was the most common underlying disease, followed by allergic purpura (25 cases, 26.0%), idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (22 cases, 22.9%), Aplastic Anemia (13 cases, 13.5%), sepsis (5 cases, 5.2%) and meningococcemia (5 cases, 5.2 %) in that order. 2) The highest incidence was seen among the children between four to six years of age, :followed by the age group of six to ten years. Boys were affected more frequently than girls (1.5 : 1). 3) The main clinical features in thrombocytopenic purpura were anemia, fever, hepatosple- nomegaly and epistaxis, while those in non-thrombocytopenic purpura were abdominal pain and vomiting. 4) The hemoglobin level was below 7 gm% in aplastic anemia and leukemia, but normal or slight decreased in the other purpuras. The platelet count was below 40,000/mm3 in 17 cases (77.3%) of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and in 10 cases (76.9%) of aplastic anemia. 5) The bleeding and clotting times were within normal range in nonthrombocytopenic purpura, but normal or sightly prolonged in thrombocytopenic purpura.
