- Abstract
- A total of 211 children fullfilling all characteristics of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (H.F.,& M. Dis.)
and 94 children of Herpangina were studied prospectively during epidemic period of 5 months,
April through August, 1981 in Seoul, Korea.
Maculopapular rash and vesicles that were changed in patterns from time to time were distributed on hands(97%), feet(95%), buttocks(46%), legs(45), arms(16%), trunk (3%), & face (1.4%) and vesicular ulcerative lesions were found on palate, uvular, anterior pillars (61%), tongue(45%), buccal mucosa(43%), gums(6%) and lips(0.9%) in H., F” & M. Dis. The most common symptoms were anorexia(72%) and fever(47%) in H., F., & M. Dis.,
whereas fever(89%) and anorexia(80%) were common to Herpangina. Rashes were lasted 2〜6 days in H., F., & M. Dis. Males were more affected than females in H., F., & M. Dis.(1.3 : 1) and Herpangina(1.5 : 1).
H., F., & M. Dis. were occurred mostly under 4 years of age(93%) and Herpangina mostly under 2 years of age(82%). Enanthems were found in 79% of cases in H., F., & M. Dis. and 100% of Herpangina.
Exanthems of H., F.» & M. Dis. were found in 100% of the patients, and in only 4% of the cases of Herpangina. The temperature ranged between normal and 39.2°C in H., F., & M.Dis. and between normal and 40.8°C in Herpangina. The fever lasted for 1 to 5 days in H.,F., & M. Dis., whereas 2 to 7 days in Herpangina. In younger children, exanthem has been seen on the buttocks, legs and arms frequently more than in older children with H., F., & M. Dis.In Herpangina, Larger sized enanthem, higher fever with longer duration were prevalent in.
the younger age group.
