Abstract
A prospective observation for growth (by weight) of 100 premature infants (some low birthweight infants were included) were conducted at the premature baby ward of Hanyang University Hospital during the one year period from May, 1981 to April, 1982. 100 subjects of the observation were devided in to 2 groups (A and B). Group A was consisted of 50 premature infants who were fed a mixture of Vegimil A(50%) and a known local infant formula (50%). Group B (well matched contral group) was also consisted of 50 premature infants who were fed a known local infant formula exclusively. 1. Estimated mean gestational age of group A was 33.6 weeks and that of group B was 33.9 weeks. 2. mean birth weigh of group A was 1754.3 gm and that of group B was 1762.8 gm. 3. Daily total Kcal given to group A were 127.1 Kcal/kg and that of group B were 150 Kcal/kg. 4. Daily total fluid supplied for both groups were equal and that were 180 ml/kg. 5. General conditions of both group were equally excellant and an average initial weight loss of group A was 6.52% and this initial weight loss was regained by the 12.6 days (aver-age) and those of group B were 6.87% and 13.4 days respectively. 6. Mean stool frequency of group A was 4.3 times per day and that of group B was 3.4 times per day. 93% of stools were normal consistency at both groups equally. 7. Average daily weight gain of group A was 23.2 gm and that of group B was 23.8 gm. Average daily weight gain of both groups after regaining of initial weight loss was 29.4 gm and 28.4 gm respectively. 8. Total serum protein, A/G ratio, BUN, Calcium, phosphorous, Aik. phosphatase of both groups were all within normal limits and statistically no significant difference was seen between the 2 groups.
