- Abstract
- Forty-one cases of acute urticaria were treated in our institution, during the period of 1 year,
from Aug. 1980 to June 1981. Throat culture were performed in 36 cases of acute urticaria
in which the etiology was obscured.
Urticaria appeared to occur more frequently in male than, in female by 2.6 times and more
prevalent between 6 and 15 years of age. Out of 36 cases, 10 cases (27.7%) had positive
culture of possible pathogenic organisms which were /9-hemolytic streptococcus, hemolytic
staphylococcus aureus, hemophilus species and streptococcus pneumoniae.
36 cases were screened, espicially, for streptococcal pharyngitis either by positive throat
culture or by significant ASO titer. 6 cases, 16.6% (3 by positive culture, 3 by increased
antibody titer), had evidence of ^-hemolytic streptococcal infection.
Though /3-hemolytic streptococcal infection, is more associated with the acute urticaria than
the other pathogenic bacterial organisms, the data of this report is significantly lower than
the one of other reports. We suggested, further more evaluation is needed to conclude
definitely that the 유"hemolytic streptococcal infection may he the causative agent of acute
urticaria in children.
