- Abstract
- A Clinical Study was made on. 542 low birth weight infants, admitted to the department
of pediatrics, Wonju Christian Hospital during 6 years from 1975 to 1980.
The results were as follows:
1) Incidence of low birth weight infants was 12.8% without sexual and seasonal predo-
migance, of which small for gestational age infants were about 50%.
2) Low birth weight infants were most prevalent among mothers under 20 years old and
over 36 years old.
3) Low birth weight infants were most prevalent among primigravida and multiparity
over 4.
4) The perinatal maternal obstetrical complications were in order of toxemia, anemia,
spontaneous premature rupture of membrane, abruptio placenta, placenta previa, hydro-
amniosis.
5) The mortality rate of low birth weight infants were 21.6%. Female exceeded the male.
Higher mortality rate was noted in the lower birth weight infants and more shortened
gestational period.
6) The most disease of low birth weight; infants were hyperbilirubinemia, apneic spells,
anemia, respiratory distress syndrome. Main causes of death were pulmonary hemorrhage^
convulsion, apneic spells, respiratory distress syndrome.
