The Clinical Study on 100 Cases of Congenital Syphillis.

Abstract
The authors studied 100 cases of congenital syphilis in the newborn treated at II Sin. Women* s Hospital from 1st August 1978 to 31st July 1979. 71 infants were born in the hospital and 29 were admitted from the out patient department. The results were as follows 1.The incidence of congenital syphilis was 1% of live born deliveries. 2. Incidence of prematurity among congenital syphilitic infants delivered at the hospitaL was 17.8% among the group whose mothers were treated during pregnancy, 56% among those whose mothers who did not receive treatment, and 59 社 among congenital syphilitic babies admitted from outpatient department. 3.Clinical minifestations in order of frequency were anemia, hepatomegaly skin lesions, jaundice and bleeding and the incidence was much higher in the untreated compared to the treated group. 4.Bone changes were mainly seen in the untreated group and were mainly seen in th& metaphysis followed by periosteum and diaphysis. 5.The incidence of raised SGOT was also higher in the untreated group. 6.Among 32 infants 9 showed positive VDRL in CSF examination, and this was not related to increase in cell count or protein. 7.Mortality was 3. 5% in the treated group and 27% in the untreated group.
