STATISTICAL STUDIES OF MALNUTRITION IN KOREAN CHILDREN

Abstract
Two hundred forty five malnutrition cases in Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea, during the past four years and nine months(April 1952 —December 1956) have been reviewed. 1.Classification of cases 2.Female children were predominant in sex incidence at the rate of 1.64 : 1. Most of the abandoned children were female and also there were more females in orphans 3.In age incidence, 62% were under one year of age and about three-fourth of total cases were under 2 years of age. The average age incidence was 1.7±0.13 years. 4.The highest monthly incidence was in March and September, and the lowest one was in February and November. The mean weight on admission was 46.8±14.65% of normal weight for their eages and 62.4% of them were under 50% of normal weight. The completely cured and discharged cases were 62.4% of total admitted cases and the mean period of hospitalization was 1.9±0.24 months. The mortality rate was 26.1% and 56.2% of death occured within 10 days of hospitalization. The hospital days of the dead cases were averaged 19.6±4.39 days. The following features are also discussed : chief complaints on admission, complications, managements, parasites infestations, causes of death and weight curves.
