- Abstract
- The serum levels of /分-carotene and vitamin A in the maternal and fetal blood were measured by the author’s modified method based on Bessey’s original procedure, and the figures observed are as follows (1)The serum carotene level of the maternal blood (51 cases) is 29.5 ± 14.6 7/dl., ranging from 54.6 to 168.8 7/dl., while that of the fetal blood (50 cases)is 26.9± 14.17/dl., ranging from 12.8 to 41.07/dl. (2)The serum vitamin A level of the maternal blood (29 cases) is 29.5 ± 14.6 7/dl., ranging from 14.9 to 44.17/dl., while that of the fetal blood (18 cases) is 12.5± 6.97/dl., ranging from 5.6 to 19.47/dl. (3)The serum B-carotene and vitamin A levels of the maternal side are 4.2 and 2.4 times as much as the levels of the fetal side respectively. (4) The serum B-carotene of the maternal blood amounts to 1.5 times as much as the levels of the normal female value, while, the level of the fetal side is less than one third of the normal female value. As for the vitamin A con-tent of the serum, there is no difference observed between the values of the maternal and the normal blood serum; however, the level of the vitamin A of the fetal blood is only one half that of the normal adult.
