- Abstract
- Bacteriological studies were performed on the specimens aspirated from the stomachs of 72 neonates and the cervical smears of their mothers to see the relationships between these two cultures and to find the significance of performing gastric lavage culture in the diagnosis of neonatal infections. There was no significant relation between the positive culture and the socioeconomic status of the parents, which is different from the previous reports.
There was no difference in the kinds of bacteria cultured from the cervices between the primigravidas and multigravidas. There was no significant relation between the duration of labor and the positive culture rates.
The positive cultures in neonates did not concur with the culture results of their mothers. This study would not be possible without the generous guidence and assistance of the Dept, of Obstetrics, NMC and we are very
grateful for the splended cooperation.
