Statistical Studies on Pediatric Emergency Room Patients

Abstract
The National Medical Center is a general hospital for children and adults, and is located in the east part of Seoul, from where emergency cases are admitted to the emergency room. Intern examines these patients & calls on resident from the appropriate department for further evaluation and treatment. The authers reviewed the records of children, who had treated by pediatritian during the 5-year period from Sept., 1969 to Aug., 1974. And we also compared to the report, “Emergency clinic in childhood” by Ki-Young Sohn during the 3-year period from March, 1963 to Feb., 1966. Then result were obtained as follows: 1.13. 2% of totla emergency patients were treated by pediatritian. The result showed mild decreament as the compare to Sohn’s record. The male to female ratio was 3 : 2 (2787 : J848). The ratio disclosed a tendency to equal, increasing with age. 2.The number of emergency patients was gradually decreased year by year. It is probably due to an increase of new general hosp. recently. And so the improvement of skill of emergency work could be expected. 3. Monthly distirbution of patients showed higher incidences in Aug., Sept, and Oct., and age distributionjgshowed 72% of cases were less than 3 years of age. 4. The most popular time of visiting the emergency room was between 4 p.m. and 8p.m., at which time about 24. 5% of the patients were seen. 5.According to geographical distribution of the patienfs address, the majority of residents lives at Song Dong Ku took advantage of this hospital and residents in Kyung Ki Do, who want to be helped economically were next. 6.Distribution of cases by diagnosis was as follows: Respiratiory disease 27.1%, neurologic disease 19. 0% and neonatal disease 11. 2%t in turn, listed respectively in decreasing order of frequency. Pneumonia was the most frequency, 10.6% of the total cases. The next diseases were URI (7. 2%) DiarrheaC6.2%) & febrile convulsion (5.9%) in turn the decreasing order. The results were similar to Sohn’s report except for accident.
