- Abstract
- Chronic ulcerative colitis in children is more rare and serious than in adults. A case of ulcerative colitis is presented.
The male patient, 15 year old, was admitted because of mucoid or blood-tinged diarrhea, edema and pale looking. He showed generalized edema, ascites, oliguria, clubbing fingers, and depression on physical examination. The diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was made from the barium enema, sigmoidoscopy and biopsy taken from the annular stricture 4 cm above anal verge. Good clinical results were obtained from the rectal instillation of prednisolone, 2 mg per kg of body weight per day. Unfortunately no follow up studies were undertaken after the discharge.
