- Abstract
- Hydronephrosis may be defined as a condition in which an increased intrarenal capacity is associated with residual urine in the renal pelvis. A clinical observation was made on the 20 cases of hydronephrosis confirmed by pathologic report or operation findings of patients admitted to Severance Hospital from May 1956 to
April 1975 and the followings were obtained; 1)The age difference of symptomatic onset: Most common age was between 1 to 6 years of age as 11 cases of total cases. This revealed that most cases had initial symptom before 6 years of age. Male to female ratio was 2 : 1 2)The incidence of pathologic side was 5 times more common in the left side than the right and also 2 cases were bilateral. 3)The underlying causes were composed of intrinsic factor in 10 cases, extrinsic factor in 7 cases and unknown in 3 cases. The pathologic site of etiologic factor was found most commonly near uteropelvic area. 4)The symptom and signs on admission were palpable mass or abdominal distention (65%), G-I trouble(30%),G-U trouble(25%), flank pain(15%) and respiratory difficulty
(5%). 5)The incidence of the associated disease in G-U tract was 6 cases of total cases(29%). 6)On laboratory examination, abnormal finding in urinalysis such as bacteriuria or hematuria was found in 60% of total cases.
B.U.N. level above 20mg% or more was 3 cases.
