- Abstract
- Forty-two cases of shigellosis in children were treated with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Septrin) from May 1970 to October 1972. 90% of the patients showed clinical improvement within 2 days and 40 of the 42 patients (95%) within 4 days. On the 25 strains of shigellae, in-vitro sensitivity was tested against eleven antimicrobial agents. Shigella flexneri was the most frequent organism (80%). The percentage of resistant strains to the
eleven antimicrobial agents is as follows: Penicillin: 100%, Cioxacillin: 100%, Streptomycin: 92%, Chloramphenicol: 88%, Tetracycline: 88%, Kanamycin: 84%,Erythromycin: 40%,Neomycin: 32%, Ampicillin: 20%, Gentamycin: 0%, SMX/TMP (Septrin) : 0%. All strains of Shigellae tested were highly sensitive to SMX/TMP (Septrin) and Gentamycin.
