A Study on Mental Development of Korean Children-Part II: Mental Development in Motor, Adaptive, Language and Personal Social behavior for preschool children (4 to 6 years of age)

Abstract
During the past decade authors had atempted to survey and establish the standard Value of Growth and Development of Korean Children for which had already published three articles on Physical, Skeletal development and Mental Development (part I) No data or standard available by which to evaluate the Mental Development for Korean Children, since foreign standards are not directly applicable to Korean Children. Thus, it is strongly urged that person working in the fields of child care, education and health, develop a new standard applicable to the evaluation of Mental Development of Korean Children. Mental Development may be greatly atered by variation in Opportunity, training, parental interest as well as heredity, environment such as socio-economic, Geographical back ground. For Motor, Mental and Social developmental evaluation, several chart and tests are helpful in assessing performance and behavior of children. We had modified and adjusted to apply several tests and inventories consisting of selected items from Gesell, Stanford-Binet, Rorschach, Cattell, Buehler, Yama shida, Zumory and ets. It consists of selected 110 items from modified schedules in each of Five Areas of Adaptive, Motor, Language and personal-social behavior at three months intervals from the age of 1 to 31 years and at 6 months intervals from the age of 4 to 6 years. Before the mental examination, interviewing with parents and obtained history including carefuL observation. Results of our studies were also compared with the standards of foreign children made by other authors, and also evaluated the factors infuluencing to mental development. The data and Result of Studies are briefly summerized as follows: 1)Total 516 preschool children (age,between' 3! to 6 years) were selected for the evaluation of mental development for which total 110 items for each of five areas were applied. 2)Range of normal Mental Development is much wider than both of Skeletal age (Bone age) and. Physical Development (weight and height). 3)In general, D.Q. (Developmental Quotient) of Urban Children are advanced than that of Rural Children. 4)No significant difference in D.Q. by sex, while female children are advanced than male children in Skeletal maturation. 5)One of the significant feature of difference between two groups of children raised in poor and better Socio-economic Environment, (standard of living, education and parents interest) 6)Comparison were made between our standard and foreign (American & Japanese) standard of D. Q. 7)We had recognized advencement of D.Q. in school children (1st grade of elementary school) who had attended kindergarden compare with non-attended children. 8)Comparing the D.Q. between Orphan children and children raised in the home, latter groups are far advanced than former groups. 9)Slight differences were noticed accordance with order of children for which first child showed advancement of D.Q. than second or third child in samfe family.
