Clinical Observation of Leukemia in Children: A Report of 45 Cases

Abstract
A total of 45 cases of leukemia in children seen at Kyungpook University Hospital from July, 1961 to June 1966 were reviewed with the following results. 1)The hospital incidence of leukemia was about 4 per 1,000 patients. 2)Male patients were more prevalent being male to female ratio 2. 5 : 1.0 3)The 4〜6 year old age group showed the highest morbidity(31. 0%). Generally the older children. had tendency of being affected more frequently. 4)44 patients with leukemia were acute type, among which lymphoblastic 29, myeloblastic 11 and monocytic 4. The remaining one case was chronic myelogenous leukemia. 5)The chief complaints in order of the frequency were fever (68.8 %), bleeding tendency (42.2%), weakness (35.3 %) and abdominal pain (35.3 %) 6) Hepatomegaly was observed in 66.6% of the patients. Splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy were noted over 64.4 % and 40.0 %, respectively. 7)The leukocyte counts were variable but the tendency of leukocytosis was found. 8)Thrombocytopenia was noted in 51.5 % of the patients studied. The platelet counts were correlated with the degree of bleeding diathesis.
