Abstract
This study intended to investigate the possible relation between the mother’s mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) at delivery and the cord blood hemoglobin values, and that between the mother’s hemoglobin at delivery and the cord blood hemoglobin values. Cord blood specimens from 74 healthy newborns were studied. 1)There was a positive significant correlation between the maternal MCHC at delivery and the cord blood hemoglobin in males, but the relationship was insignificant in females. 2) The correlation between the maternal hemoglobin at delivery and the cord blood hemoglobin was positive and significant both in males and in females. 3)The authors suggest to give medicinal iron to all pregnant women in order to prevent maternal anemia. 4)The overall average mean value of the cord blood hemoglobin was 17. 57+1.09 g per 100 ml (males 17.50, females 17.65). There was no statistically significant difference between the sex-specific values. These values corresponded to those found in other authors.
