- Abstract
- One case of dystonia musculorum deformans in 12 years old Korean boy followed encephalitis is presented.
After having symptoms of epidemic encephalitis such as high fever, chillness, speech disturbances, unconsciousness and convulsion for about a week hypertonus and sometimes interniittent spasms of the flexor muscles of left upper extremity appeared spontaneously. The purposeless involuntary dystonic movement spread to, as the disease progresses, entire upper extremity, neck, trunk and lower extremity, particularly the muscles of neck and pelvis. The movement gradually become exaggerated. The neck had a spasmodic torticollis and the pelvis rotated in the movement. Ultimately the patient produced a slow irregular writhing, twisting and turning of the body. Eventually left upper arm acquired a position of flexion of elbow. The patient had lordosis too. The peculiar dystonic movements were produced by emotional upset and poor psychiatric care frequently but while he is sleep the movements ceased. During whole the period of hospitalization the patient's body was contracted into a peculiar twistedmass and become confined to bed. The incidence, pathology, symptoms and treatment of this disease is reviewed.
