- Heart Disease Screening in School Children

- Abstract
- Mass screening on heart diseases was performed on 20, 251 elementary school children in Seoul. Study was done about the incidence and type of the individual heart diseases and status of the treatment. The results were as follows. 1) Fifty-nine children had heart diseases, representing 0.29 % of 20, 251 children. Among those,
52 children had congenital heart diseases, representing 0.26%, and 6 children had rheumatic heart diseases, representing 0.03%. 2)The incidence of individual lesions of congenital heart diseases is as follows:
Ventricular septal defect 23 Atrial septal defect 13 Patent ductus arteriosus 9 Pulmonary stenosis 3
Dextrocardia 3 Eisenmenger complex 1 Ratio of male to female was 4 : 6. 3) The incidence of individual rheumatic heart diseases is as follows: Mitral insufficiency+Mitral stenosis 2, Mitral insufficiency 1 Mitral insufficiency + Aortic insufficiency 2, Aortic insufficiency 1 Ratio of male to female was 1 : 5. 4) Ratio of congenital to rheumatic heart disease was 8.7 : 1. 5) Operated cases were only two out of 52 congenital heart diseases, representing 3.8%.
Out of 6 cases of rheumatic heart disease, only one case was under prophylactic penicillin therapy.
