- Clinical and Hematological Studies of Leukemia in Children

- Abstract
- A total of 35 cases of leukemia in children who were admitted at the Hanyang University Hospital during the past two and half years from May 1972 to Oct. 1974 were analysed clinically and hematologically. Following could be summarized; 1.The Incidence of Leukemia was about 5per 1, 000 pediatric inpatient. 2.Common chief complaints in order of frequency were fever (34%), weakness (17%), bleeding tendency (14%), and pallor (14%), 3. Common objective signs were hepatomegaly (66%), splenomegaly (51%), lymphadenopathy(23%), and purpura (petechiae) (17%). 4.Hemogolobin Value below 4 gm% were found in 9 cases (26%), below 6 gm% in 15 cases-
(43%),below 8 gm% in 23 cases (66%) where as above 10 gm% in 5 cases (14%). 5. The Leukocyte counts were variable, but tendency of leukocytosis was found in 25 cases (72%), where as leukopenia was found in 25 cases (14%), 6.Platelet counts were decreased in 30 cases (85.7%), marked thrombocytopenia below 10, 000
/mm3 were found in 4 cases (11%), but marked thrombocytosis were noticed in 2 cases (over 1 million and 5 millions). 7. Distribution of the cytological types was as follows: 32 patients with leukemia were acute
type, among which Monoblastic, Monomyelogenous, Histiocytic, Lymphoblastic, and Reticulum cell Leukemia in order of frequency. 8. Sex distribution of Leukemia patients was quite different, male patients were more prevalent being male to female ratio 2.4 : 1. 9.Age distribution of Leukemia patients was variable, 0~2 years age group showed the highest morbidity (43%), with 66%, in up to 5 years old age. 10.Reviewing and comparing the reference on the studies of leukemia in children. The distribution of various cytological types were quite different from those of other reported datas.
