- Clinical Studies of Urinary Tract Infections in Infants and Children

- Abstract
- Clinical studies on the 40 cases of urinary tract infections who were admitted to the pediatric
department of Severance Hospital from Jan. 1964 to Dec. 1973, were subjected in this study.
The results were as follows:
1) Among the 40cases,26 cases(65%) were male and 14 cases〔35%) were female.
2) Age incidence showed 7 to 12 years to be most commonly affected and 8 cases (20%) in.
male and 5 cases (12.5%) in female in this age group.. The yongest patient was 11 days-old.
3) Fever was the most common chief complaints and abdominal pain, hematuria, dysuria,
frequency, nausea and vomiting were next common.
4) Hematofogical and urinary examinations disclosed low hemoglobin in 15%, leucocytosis in.
55% and high red Blood cells in urine 70% and high white Blood cells in urine 75%.
5) I.V.P. findings which was examined in 10 cases were showed only 4 abnormal cases.
6) Cystocopic findings which was examined in 5 cases were showed acute cystitis in 1 acute
hemorrhagic cystitis in 1 and 3 of tuberculous cystitis.
7) E. Coli was the most prominent strain, as the result of sensitive test, Kanamycin was the most
sensitive drug to the E. Coli (50%).
8) Upper respiratory infection in 5 cases (12.5%) were the most common predisposing factor
and pulmonary tuberculosis in 3 cases (7.5%) were next common.
9) Complications showed septicemia in 2 cases(5%),bilateral tuberculous epididymitis in 1(2.5%),
chronic uremia in 1 (2.5%), and ureteral dilatation in 1 case (2.5%).
10) Abdominal distention (22.5%) was the most common in physical examination, puffy face
(15%) hepatomegaly (12.5%) were next common.
11) There were hydronephrosis, hydroureter, horseshoe kidney, hypospadia, epispadia as combined
anomalies i n:each case in the urogenital tract.
12) Operative treatments showed incision & drainage in 1 case for renal carbuncle and nephrectomy
in 4 cases for renal tuberculosis.
13) Results on discharge were that 2 recovered :cases (5%), 30 improved cases (75%), 6 no improvement
cases (15%) and 2 expired (5%).
