- Abstract
- This paper is an attempt to make a report on clinical observation, laboratory findings and a study of
the causes of the disease on the cases of sixty-nine child patients under the impression of acute toxic
encephalopathy who had been treated in Ewha Womans University Hospital for 2/8/12 years from
January of 1968 to August of 1970.
In clinical observation, a sudden attack of fever, convulsion and the loss of consciousness were found,
and, moreover, disturbance of respiration was also observed in half the patients.
This disease took place among the children from 2 months to 13 years of age, most of whom were
under six years. And there no sexual characteristics. It was noticed that this was more frequent in
spring and fall than in the others.
In spinal fluid findings, no abnormal findings were found, and in spite of slight increase of G. P. T.,
we could not find any close relation between prognosis and the increase of G. P. T.
In peripheral blood findings, slight increase of leukocyte, especially o£ neutrophile leukocyte was found.
In the study of the causes of the disease, they were undetermined in most cases, but some of them
revealed bacterial dysentry (Shigellcsis), viral infection, drug intoxication, and etc.
