- Abstract
- This paper presents the clinical study of 31 cases under 15 years of age who had been admitted to
Severance Hospital and Wonju Union Christian Hospital from January, 1964 to December, 1968
with the diagnosis of Guillain Barre syndrome.
1. Twenty one cases were male and 10 cases female. The age ranged from 3 months to 15 years
with the peak incidence of 3 to 6 years. The incidence was highest during summer.
2. Thirteen out of 31 cases had preceding diseases, 9 being upper respiratory infections.
3. Physical findings at the time of admission were paralysis of lower legs in all 31 cases, upper
extremities in 26, cranial nerve in 10, and respiratory muscles in 4.
4. No albuminocytologic dissociation was observed in 8 out of 31 cases at the time of admission,
but was noted in 7 of them one week later, and the rest 2 weeks later.
5. The over all recovery rate was 88%, most recovering within 5 months after the onset. Only 2
cases died, the mortality rate being 6%.
6. There waw no appreciable difference between results reported by Kim and this study.
