Abstract
This study is a clinical analysis of 111 cases of acute appendicitis in children under the age of 15 which were treated at Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital during the past 4 year period from January 1985 to December 1988. The following results were obtained. 1) The incidence of appendicitis was low (2.7%) under the age of 5 and showed a gradual increase in proportion to age. 2) The sex ratio of male to female was 1.2:1. 3) The overall perforation rate was 18.0%. 4) The most common clinical symptom was right lower quadrant pain and the most frequent physical sign was tenderness on right lower quadrant. 5) Most of the perforated group had an increase in neutrophils. 6) The methods of operations were appendectomy in all cases of imperforated group and appen- dectomy with or without drainage in perforated group. 7) By bacterial culture of the peritoneal contents in perforated group, E.Coli was isolated most frequently. 8) The average hospital stay was 5.4 days in imperforated group and 10.8 days in perforated group.
