Abstract |
The authors studied 75 cases of congenital syphilis in the newborn treated at II Sin Christian
Hospital from January 1983 to December 1987.
The results were as follows;
1) The incidence of syphilis among the admitted pregnant women for delivery was 0.62%.
2) The incidence of neonatal syphilis from the 208 syphilis mothers was 36.1%.
3) The incidence of prematurity and low birth weight neonate among congenital syphilitic infants
were 21.4% and 25% among the group whose mothers were treated during pregnancy, 42.6% and 55.
4% among those whose mothers did not be treated.
4) The principal clinical features of congenital syphilis were anemia, skin manifestation, hepatos-
plenomegaly and jaundice and the incidence was higher in the untreated compared to the treated
group.
5) Bony changes were mainly seen in the untreated group and were periostitis, osteochondritis,
metaphysitis and diaphysitis.
6) Motality rate was 10.6% in the untreated group. |
