Abstract
We studied the influence of intravenous electrolyte-free dextrose solution given to the mother during labor on the change of maternal and cord serum concentrations and the incidence of hyponatremia in 109 mothers and their newborns. 1) Na+ concentrations of maternal and cord serum in study group given intravenous electrolyte free dextrose solutions were 134.57土2.43 and 134.54±2.95, which was significantly lower, compares to 137.97±2 ,28 and 137.74±2.56 of control group, respectively. 2) There is a positive correlation between Na+ concentrations of maternal and cord serum(y=0.7386X+35.32, r=0.83595, p<0.001). 2) The sodium concentration of cord serum decreased in proportion to the infused volume of electrolyte-free dextrose solution given to mother during labor and a significant inverse correlation was found between the infused volume of fluid and the sodium concentration of cord serum(y= -0.00425X+127.59, r=-0.67279, P<0.001).
Key Words: Sodium concentration.
