Abstract
The author studied 105 cases of HRV antigen positive detected by ELISA method among 325 children admitted to the pediatric ward at St. Benedict hospital, whose chief complain was diarrhea during the period of 1 year from Dec. 1st 1983 to Nov. 30, 1984. The results were as follow: 1) A high incidence of antigen positive was observed among the children with diarrhea during the month of Oct. and Nov. with the rate of 59.5% and 75.9% respectively. The age distribution of the 105 antigen-positive cases was 75.1% in the range of 6 to 15 months. 2) In 80% of the cases, the number of diarrhea was more than 5 times per day. The character of diarrhea was watery in 82.9%. 3) URI symptom was found in approximately 1/3, vomiting in 83.8%, fever 65.7% preceding or following the episode of diarrhea. 4) Moderate to mild isotonic dehydration developed in 97. % and the peripheral blood findings were within normal limit. 5) The duration of diarrhea prior to hospitalization was 2.57±1.40days, the hospital stay was 5.00±1.32days, and the total length of illness was estimated to be7 to 8days. 6) Although as a complication, intussusception was found to bel.91%, no mortality was reported. In the watery diarrhea more than five times per day accompanied with URI symptom and vomiting in children under the age of 2 years during the month of Oct. and Nov. the ausative agent seems to be HRV as our study shows.
