Abstract
Charts of very low birth weight infants weighing less than 1,500 grams at birth were reviewed and the results analyzed. Infants were 107 in numbers, admitted to NICU, Ewha Womans University Hospital for the period of 4 years from July 1980 to June 1984 including outborns. Results were as follows: 1) Incidence of very low birth weight infant was 1. 1% of total births and mortality rate 39.3%. 2) Mortality rate was higher in male. 3) The higher was mortality rate, the shorter gestational age. 4) Mortality rate was higher in small for gestational age infants(SGA). 5) Premature rupture of membrane was the most common maternal risk factor and the next was preeclampsia andjor eclampsia. 6) Lower birth weight, shorter gestational age, lower Apgar score, respiratory distress syndrome and intracranial hemorrhage are more common in expired group. 7) Major morbidities of expired infants were respiratory distress syndrome, neonatalapnea, perinatal asphyxia and intracranial hemorrhage.
