Abstract |
An in-vitro sensitivity of Ceftizoxime sodium (CZX), a third generation Cephalosporin, using Epocelin® (a product of Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Central Laboratory, Japan), was studied against various bacterial strains isolated from the children with infections hospitalized on the pediatric ward of Hanyang University Hospital during the period from February, 1983 up to June, 1983. And therapeutic responses were observed in 26 pediatric cases
hospitalized for various types of infections when treated with CZX. The summary of the results from the study and the observation is as follows: 1)The in-vitro sensitivity test of CZX revealed high sensitivity results for S, aureus, 91.8%; E, coli, 100%; K, pneumoniae, 100%; K. oxytoca, 100%; E. cloacae, 93.2%; and C. freundii, 87.5%.
2)CZX showed intermediate sensitivity results for S. epidermis, 65.5% and Enterococci, 66.6%.3)CZX showed low or poor sensitivity results for P. aeruginosa and A. anitratus.4)The clinical therapeutic trial of CZX revealed good to excellent responses in 81% of the cases treated (21/26): excellent in 14 cases, good in 7 cases, fair in 2 cases and poor in 3 cases. The authors conclude from the laboratory and the clinical study that Ceftizoxime Sodium:
Epocelin®) carries broad spectrum sensitivity and also high sensitivity for certain bacterial strains observed, and therefore, CZX is considered valuable for clinical use as a broad spectrum antibiotic agent.
