Abstract
A clinical study was done in 21 cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia admitted to Busan National University Hospital from Jan. 1973 to Dec. 1982. The following results were obtained: 1)Onset of symptoms were within 24 hours in 8 cases(38.1%) and in 3 cases symptoms were occurred after 6 months. About half of the patients were admitted within 1 week, male were affected more frequently than female by a 1.6 : 1 ratio. 2) Among 21 cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, there were 17 cases of Bochdalek hernia and 2 cases of diaphragmatic eventration, 2 cases of undermined. Colon and small intestine were most frequently herniated. 3) Symptoms on admission were dyspnea(90.5%), cyanosis, vomiting, in order of frequency and the most common signs were decreased breathing sound, mediastinal shifting, subcostal retraction. 4)Operation was done in 19 cases. Among them, 9 cases were abdominal approach, 6 cases were thoracic apporach, 4 cases were thoracoabdominal approach. The most common postoperative complications were pneumonia and pneumothorax. 5)The mortality rate were 23.8% and 4 of 8 cases admitted within 24 hours expired with severe herniation.
