Abstract |
We observed 62 cases of neonatal convulsion who were admitted to the department of
Pediatrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital during the 6 1/2 year period from January,
1976 to June, 1982.
The following results were obtained,
1. The etiology of neonatal convulsion were, hypoxic brain damage (38.7%), hypocalcemia (14. 5%), infection(12.9%), hyponatremia(6.5%) hypoglycemia(3.2%), hypernatremia(1.6%)and unknown(22.6%).
2. The onset of most neonatal convulsion was within the 3rd day of life(90.4%),
and the majority(35.5%) on the first 24 hours of life.
3. The clinical manifestations of neonatal convulsion were subtle type(44.1%), tonic(20.6%),
multifocal clonic(19.1%), myoclonic(10.3%) and focal clonic type(5.9%).
4. The immediate outcome of neonatal convulsion were, improvement in 69.4%, discharge
against medical advice without improvement in 16.1% and death in 14.5%.
