Abstract |
Seizure is the frequent disorders in childhood and detection of organic lesion is very
important for both determination of a theraputic plan and the prognosis of the patient.
EEG and CAT studies were performed in 65 patients with seizure disorders at Maryknoll
hospital, from Jun, ’76 to Dec, ’80,was reviwed and analysed.
The following results were obtained.
CAT pathology showed correlation to the types of seizures whereas a significant correlation
could be established with residual brain scar and tumors and with localized neurologic or
EEG finding. CAT scaning is the usefullness of a procedure, lowever, can not be limited only the positive
studies. In children with chronic seizure disorders in which there has been a change in
seizure pattern or some focality or neurologic sign or EEG, a normal CAT may in fact be
quite useful in ruling out progressive disease CAT is by for the best method to demonstrated
a stractural cerebral lesion in epilepsies. However, functional test, such as neurologic examination
and EEG can not be replaced. The reason for the comparatively small number of localized CAT finding
many partly be found in methodologic difficulties imoging tenporobosal and frontobasal regions.
Furthermore the possibility that the localized abnormality is not of an anatomic but of a biochemical
nature in some epilepsies.
