| Abstract |
|
The results of clinical observation and intradermal test on 44 bronchial asthma patients who were seen at the department of pediatrics, N.M.C. fro Jan. 1967 to Jun. 1979 were presented. 1) Age distribution at the time of admission ranged between 2 years and 14 years. Most of the patients(70.5%) were between 4 and 9 years of age. Sex ratio was 2.1:1 with male predominance. 2) The peak age of the onset was between 3 and 6 years of age, 30 cases being included. 3) In 30 percent of the cases there noted allergic history other than asthma. Allergic family history was positive in 30 %. 4) Seasonal variation showed peak incidence in fall followed by summer, winter and spring in order. The perennial attacks include 9.1% of the cases. 5) Eosinophilia was noted in 64.1% and closely related to the allergic history of the patient. 6) On chest x-ray findings, 28.6% were normal, 40.5% had infiltration and 31.0% were emphysematous. 7) Intradermal tests were performed on 10 parients. All of the them showed positive reaction and total frequency of detection of allergens revealed more than 2. 8) Allergens with positive reactions were dust in 90%, animal hair in 70%, foods in 60%, mold in 50% and pollen in 10%. 9) All the patients were reactive to medical treatment, with complete relief of symptoms in 81.89% and incomplete relief in 18.2%. No morality was noted. |
