Abstract
The National Medical Center is a general hospital for children and adults, and is located in the east part of Seoul, from where emergency cases are admitted to the emergency clinic. One first-year resident examines these patients and calls a staff doctor from the appropriate department for further evaluation and treatment. The author reviewed the records in children under 15 years of age during the 3-year period from March, 1963 to February, 1966. Return visits were not included. 1)Data were studied on 3,702 emergency cases, both surgical and medical. The total number of male was 2,229 and, that of female, 1,473; with an increasing consultation frequency. More patients were seen during the summer season. 2)The most frequent primary diagnoses were in decreasing order: accidents (21.4%), lower reipiratory infections (14.5%), acute pharyngitis (7.9%), and diarrhea (6.8%). 3)About 53 per cent of all visits were not considered seriously ill or "medical emergenciesw. Patients seen betwe en mid-night and 8 : 00 a.m. represented only 13 per cent of the total visits but could more frequently be classified as real emergency cases.
