Abstract |
Although reagent test strip-photometer method is frequently used to estimate plasma glucose values in nurseries, the accuracy in newborns have not been evaluated previously.
In this study values of 44 samples of laboratory glucose were compared with values simultaneously obtained by reagent test strip-photometer.
Laboratory values were determined by glucose oxidase method using veous plasma. Reagent test strip-photometer values were determined by GLUCOPAD and GLUCOSTATTM CT-4310 (DAIICH, KYOTO, JAPAN) using venous whole blood and plasma, capillary whole blood and plasma.
Of 44 glucose determination the mean laboratory value was 97.40¡¾66.5 mg/dl. Four values by strip-photometer were compared with laboratory values: Venous whole blood (r=0.830), venous plasma (r=0.660), capillary whole blood (r=0.842), capillary plasma (r=0.674). The venous and capillary whole blood values obtained by strip-photometer were overestimated (p<0.001). The correlation coefficient of capillary whole blood values for venous whole blood values were 0.868.
These data suggest that plasma is unsuitable specimen for strip-photometer and that screening of hypoglycemic newborns by strip-photometerrquires optimal screening threshold in consideration of difference between values obtained by strip-photometer and laboratory analysis. |
