Abstract |
Clinical and environmental studies were made on 150 cases of bronchial asthma patients who were
admitted to the Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital from January, 1987, to December, 1988. Results
were as folios:
1) The age distribution showed 64.7% under 6 years old; male to female ratio was 2.4:1.
2) The peak age of onset was below 6 years of age, 80.7% of total cases being included.
3) Bronchial asthma occured most common in the fall (43.3%), especially in September (24%).
4) 29.3% of asthmatic children reported a family Hx. of allergy. 46% of asthmatic children had a
past Hx.: 14% in bronchiolitis 9.3% in allergic rhinitis, 8% in atopic dermatitis, 4.3% in urticaria and
two diseases appeared simultaneously in 10%.
5) Eosinophillia was noted in 36.7% and total IgE level above mean±2SD at different age was
noted in 66.9%.
6) Positive reaction with scratch skin test was 87.2%. Allergen with highest positive reaction were
Dust and Mites (77.7%).
7) RAST was checked in 67 cases, positive reaction was 61.2% in House dust, 65.7% in D.P, 64.2%
in D.F, 22.4% in Cat fur,, 6% in Cockroach.
8) The aggreement rate between RAST and allergy skin test were Dust in 71.6% D.P in 82.1%, D.
fin 79.1%. |
