Abstract
Two dimensional echocardiographic examinations of the proximal left and right coronary artery were performed in 140 infants and children without heart disease. Eighty boys and 60 girls were studied whose ages ranged from newborn to 15 years old. The diameter of the proximal left cornonary artery was 0.8 mm in newborn and 1.9 mm in teenagers. The diameter of the proximal right coronary artery was 0.8 mm in newborn and 1.7 mm in teenagers. The ratio of coronary artery to aorta diameter was below 0.1. No significant difference was observed bewteen male and female subjects. There was linear correlation between the coronary artery diameter and the subject’s age, weight, height, and body surface area. The closest linear correlation was noted between left coronary artery and body surface area. Knowing normal echocardiographic value for proximal coronary artery diameters, even subtle changes of these vessels can be diagnosed and the number of invasive diagnostic procedures in Kawasaki disease, can be reduced.
