Abstract
Among the total of 2,483 Newborns delivered at Hanyang University Hospital from January 1987 to December 1988, a clinical study was performed of meconium stained baby. The results are summerized as follows: 1) The incidence of meconium staining was 13.4% (333 cases) in total 2,483 newborns. 2) In the groups that the birth weight is 2501 ~ 4000 gm and up to 4001 gm, the incidence of meconium staining was 13.5% and 22.5%. 3) As the gestational age increased, the incidence of meconium staining was higher, 14.3% in those during 38〜42 weeks, 8.4% in those less than 37 weeks and 19.3% in those over 42 weeks. 4) The difference of both mean l-and 5-minute Apgar scores between the meconium and the non-meconium group was no significant. 5) The peripheral blood examination was performed of meconium stained baby, the mean Hb was 18.2±0.2 g/d/, the mean platelet count was (295.6±6.2)x 10/ mm3, and the mean nucleated RBC count was 1.5±0.3/100 WBC. The positive rate of blood culture was zero. 6) There was no difference in mother's age and parity between the meconium and non-meconium group. 7) The incidence of combined perinatal and maternal problems (e.g. eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, cord prolapse, etc.) was higher in the meconium stained group than in the non-meconium stained group. 8) The incidence of meconium staining by mode of delivery was 15.7% in spontaneous vaginal delivery group, 11.3% in vacuum delivery group, 11.0% in the cesarean section delivery group and 28. 6% in the breech delivery group. 9) The incidence of fetal distress was 3.6% in the meconium stained group compared to 1.6% in the non-meconium stained group. 10) The neonatal death rate was 0.6% in the meconium stained group compared to 2.2% in the non-meconium stained group.
