Abstract
Statistical analysis of outpatients and inpatients from 1985 to 1988 was assessed with aims to have an overal grasp of patterns and trends of childhood diseases at Seoul National University Children, s Hospital. 1) Number of outpatient visits were totally 458,390 with annual number of visits of 144,754 and average daily number of 461, including 241 visits in Department of Pediatrics. 2) Number of patients at Eemergency room was totally 17,522 with average daily visits of 16. 3) Actual number of inpatients during 3 years was 22,789 totally and 7,596 annually, with average daily inpatient number 216, average length of hospital stay 10.8 days and boy to girl ratio of 1.62:1. Number of inpatients classified by age was 19.2% under 1 year, 50.0% between 1 and 6 years, 23. 8% 7 to 12 years of age and 8.0% over 13 years of age. Congenital anomaly occupied highest frequency (24.9%) among inpatients, most of which were cardiovascular system being 89.2% in its proportion. Overall mortality rate in inpatients was 1.8%, while 2.1% and 6.1% in Dept, of Pediatrics and Dept, of Thoracic Surgery respectively. Major causes of death in inpatients were cardiovascular system (47.5%), neoplasms (15.0%) and perinatal diseases (10.4%) in order of frequency. 4) 12,212 cases of operation were performed from Feb., 1986 to Dec., 1988, of which 24% cases by pediatric surgery, 17% by thoraic surgery, 14% by orthopedic surgery, 13% by ENT and 11% by plastic surgery respectively. Among age distribution of patients operated, preschool age group of 2 to 5 years was highest, being 42% and age group under one year was 16%.
