Abstract
Statistical analysis of death cases during the 9 years from Jan. 1979 to Dec. 1987 in pediatric ward of Soonchunhyang university hospital was carried out. The following results were observed. 1) Total numbers of admission during the 9 years were 16365, of whom 296 expired. 2) Average mortality rate was 1.8% and the annual mortality rate showed decreasing tendency from 1979 to 1987. 3) In age distribution, the neonates and infants under 1 year of age occupied 73% of total death. 4) On the duration of hospitalization, 61.2% of death cases were died within 48 hours. 5) Major leading causes of death were immaturity, sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome, congenital heart disease and Reye syndrome in the order of frequency. 6) Causes of death by age were as follows; a) In the neonatal period, immaturity was the most common cause and followed by respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis in the order of frequency. b) In the group of 4 weeks to 1 year of age, congenital heart disease was the most common cause and followed by Reye syndrome and sepsis. c) In the group of 2 to 6 years of age, Reye syndrome and toxic encephalopathy were the most common causes and followed by malignant neoplasm and meningoencephalitis. d) In the group of 7 to 12 years of age, malignant neoplasm was the most common cause and the next was meningoencephalitis.
