Abstract |
Clinical observation was performed on 65 cases of Guillain -Barré syndrome which were en at the
Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Hospital, during the past 10 years from January
1977 to December 1986.
The results were as follows:
1) The ratio of male to female was 2:1 and 56.9% of the total cases were seen between the ages of
1-5 years.
2) The highest seasonal incidence was seen in Summer and there was no significant variation in
annual incidence.
3) Preceding illness was found in 66.1 % of the total cases and U.R.I was the most common one (67.4
% of preceding illnesses).
4) The site of paralysis on admission was upper and lower extremities in 48 cases (73.8%), lower
extremity in 17 cases (26.2%), cranial nerve involvement in 22 cases (33.8%) and respiratory muscle
in 8 cases (12.3%).
5) The protein content of C.S.F was elevated in 29 cases of 63 cases (46%) on admission .and in 34
cases of 41 cases (82.9%) one week later.
6) The progression of illness stopped within 2 weeks in 48 cases of 51 cases (94.1 %).
7) Eighty per cent of the total cases improved on discharge and the mortality was 1.5%. The
duration of recovery was less than 4 months in 84.6% of the cases. |
