Abstract |
8934 children under the age of 15 years who vistited the emergency room of Dong San hosital,
Keimyung University during a 3-year period from Jan. 1982 to Dec. 1984 were analized clinically and
statistically.
The results were as follows
1) Out of 8934 pediatric emergency patients, 6951 cases (77.8%) were under the 6 years of age and
the peak incidence was between 1 month to 11 months of age (25.7%).
2) The male to female ratio was 1.8: 1.
3) The higher seasonal incidende was in Spring and Summer with the peak in September.
4) 24.8% of the cases visited the emergency room between 8-11 PM and 20.1% were between 4-7
PM. The number of patients visiting the emergency room between midnight to 3 AM has been
increasing recently.
5) Distribution by International Classification of Diseases was respiratory diseases (28.9%), gastro-
intestinal diseases (20.5%) and injury and poisoning (17.5%) in order.
6) Most frequent disease was actue gastroenteritis (15.7%) followed by upper respiratory infection
including tonsillitis (15.4%), pneumonia (6.3%) and febrile convulson (5.0%) in order.
7) 40.4% of the patients who visited the emergency room were hospitalized. Significanlty more
patients who had medical insurance (48.7%) were admitted compared with charity (34.0%) and
non-insurance patients (31.1%). |
