Abstract
We took clinical study for 47 cases of Reye syndrome at S.C.H. University Hospital during last 8 years from Jan:, 1979 to Dec., 1986. The results obtained were as follows; 1) There was no significant difference in annual incidence and the seasonal incidence was highest in sumer and autumn. 2) The sex ratio of male to female was 1:1.4. 3) Among 47 cases, 34 cases (72.3%) were under 1 year of age. 4) Of the 47 cases, the preceeding illnesses were upper respiratory infection in 34 cases (72.2%), gastroenteritis in 5 cases (10.6%), upper respiratory infection with gastroenteritis in 5 cases (10.6%), pneumonia in 2 cases (4.3%), and chicken pox in 1 case (2.1%). 5) The manin clinical symptos were nausea and vomiting (80.9%), fever (74.5%), hyperventilation (59.6%), and hepatomegaly (48.9%). 6) The mortality was high in patients with elevated serum ammonia (≧ 300 ug/dl) and prolonged Prothrombin time ((≧ 14 sec). 7) According to Lovejoy’s classificatin, 17 cases (38.3%) were in stage III and IV on the admission. The higher the stage, the higher the mortality. 8) The overall mortality rate was 44.7%.
