Abstract
A clinical study was performed on 7,534 cases of disease entity and course in adolescence who were admitted to various department including internal medicine, pediatrics in Pusan National University Hospital from January 1980 to December 1985.The results are as follows: 1) The age distribution was from 10 years to 20 years of age which was devided to early adolescence in 21.2%, middle in 30.9% and late in 47.9%. The sex ratio of male to female was 1.65 : 1. 2) Among diseases in adolescence, the injury and poisoning were most common especially in late adolescence which were including fracture, open wound and intracranial injury. Next, sensory organ nervous system disease was 14.7% including otitis media, strabismus, cataract and epilepsy, respiratory disease 12.0% including tonsillitis, sinusitis, nasal septal deviation and pneumonia. Others were congenital anomaly 8.8% including congenital heart disease, infectious disease 8.7% including tuberculosis, digestive disease 6.3%, genitourinary disease 5.6%,circulatory system disease 4.9% and mental disorder 3.8%. 3) According to admitted department, internal medicine was 16.2%, E.N.T. 15.2%, pediatrics 11.4%, ophthalmology 10.2%, each surgery from 5.7 to 8.9%, urology 5.0%, psychiatry 4.1%, plastic surgery 3.7%, dental 2.2%, OB & GY 1.3% and dermatology 0.5%. 4) In aspect of course, the cure rate was 84.9%, the death rate was 2.8%. The death was caused mainly by trauma (28.0%), heart disease &/or CHF (10.9), leukemia (9.6%) and renal failure (6.6%).
