Abstract |
The statistical analysis on the mortality for the patients under the age of 15 years which were hospitalized to Pediatric Department of Keimyung University, Dong San Hospital during the period of 5 years from. January 1979 through December 1983 were carried out. Out of 19,409 hospitalized patients, 576 were death, showing 2.97% mortality and the leading causes of death were sepsis(20.4%), pneumonia(13.8%) and toxic encephalopathy
(9.7%) in order. The mortality rate was highest during the neonatal period revealing 46.7% and had tendency of decreasing the mortality as the increasing the age. There was some difference of the causes of death in each age group. In the neonatal period, sepsis was the most frequent(29.3%) followed by premturity(17.6%) and IRDS
(17.6%). After 1 month to 6 years of age, toxic encephalopathy(20.2〜23.0%) was the most frequent,
pneumonia(ll. 2~16.9%) and sepsis(11.2〜15.6%) in order. Over 6 years of age, the most common was Japanese B encephalitis(15.8%) and along with the increasing the age, leukemia(12.5%) and hepatitis(12.5%) appeared as a important causes. 55.5% of expired cases died within 48 hours following hospitalization.
